Why Adair is in the Red Zone for COVID spread

"Please take this seriously. You have a wonderful team at the local health department. Please heed their warnings! We must be safe, wear the mask, social distance, decrease contacts and wash hands."

By Dr. Marian Smith

To the Citizens of Adair County,

I love Columbia, Kentucky. I love Adair County! Though I have not lived in Adair County since I graduated from high school, my mom and family live in Adair County - it is a special place with special people!

Last evening, I came "home" to assist my mother with some things. She needed some grocery items, so I waited till about 7:00 PM to take her to Walmart. She was tired and decided not to go, so I headed down Hwy 206 alone.

When I arrived at the grocery store, I saw the signage related to the CDC guidelines (please wear a mask, please social distance, etc.). As I made my way down aisle after aisle (quickly), I was so afraid! People of all ages were NOT adhering to the posted, published guidelines! I walked faster and faster, grabbing only essential items. I could not get out of the store fast enough!

But, on the way out, I did speak with the two managers and commended them because EVERY employee was wearing a properly fitted mask. I expressed my concern for them and their colleagues.

Then it dawned on me, these are our family members and neighbors! Shoppers were exposing them to a deadly virus!!

Before I left Mom's house, I got a ping on my phone. I have taught community health and epidemiology for years--I am on every newsfeed imaginable. The newest data--Adair County is in a red-zone of community spread of Covid-19! I know why!

We are in the escalation phase of a pandemic that kills people! My friends, neighbors, family members and acquaintances have died or are currently hospitalized.

I beg and plead to the citizens of this lovely "home", please take this seriously. You have a wonderful team at the local health department. Please heed their warnings!

We must be safe, wear the mask, social distance, decrease contacts and wash hands! It is for the love of neighbor!

Adair County now among red colored hot spots

2020-10-08 - Ten County Health District - Photo from LCDHD daily report.
As of October 7, 2020, Columbia and Adair County numbers of new cases put us in the red zone as a Coronavirus critical hotspot. An unverified word on social media is that the spike in cases happened after a church held crowded revival meetings resulting in multiple people becoming infected with the virus.

Correction: This article previously identified a guest pastor as one of those infected, and this is not the case. We apologize for the confusion.

Citizens are called on to work hard to protect ourselves and others by wearing masks and keeping a distance of at least 6 feet between ourselves and others in public places.

The Lake Cumberland District Health Department ten counties are *Adair, Russell, Green, Taylor, Casey, Pulaski, *McCreary, Cumberland, *Clinton and Cumberland ( * = red county).
