CASA swears in first virtual training class

The number of vulnerable children in the child welfare system continues to rise. The Kentucky Administrative Office of the Court (AOC) reported 1,443 cases of neglect, abuse, and dependency in the CASA service region in 2019.

Edmonton, KY - CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of South Central KY held the swearing in ceremony of their first virtual training class at the Metcalfe County Courthouse, performed by Family Court Judge Mica Pence. Six women from around the region took the CASA Oath.

With the Coronavirus pandemic, CASA, like many other organizations, is adapting its training process to correspond with the social distancing guidelines.

"This is a great opportunity for us try out the virtual training curriculum National CASA provides. It'll be a nice tool in our toolbox for the future," reports Jana Sublett, Executive Director. "We were very excited to get this final training piece completed. We already have children ready to assign to these advocates."

The training took place over 5 Thursday mornings in August and early September. The group used a combination of Zoom and National CASA's Moodle Room.

In addition to the online sessions, there was approximately 3 hours of outside reading / study per training day necessary to complete the training. This brought the training time up to the usual 30 hours of total training.

Steve Jones, Advocate Development Specialist stresses, "While this is different from our normal, in-person training, holding the training virtually adds much more flexibility for those community volunteers interested in going through the training. We anticipate virtual training for the foreseeable future."

Applications for the next virtual training beginning October 15, 2020 can be found on the site at www.casaofsck.org/volunteer, or for more information, contact the Steve Jones at 270.782.5353 or Steve@CASAofSCK.org.
