Traditional fall walk scheduled for Columbia October 9 By George Kolbenschlag The annual Columbia Rotary Club family walk will be October 9 in conjunction with Columbias Downtown Days Festival. The walk is in cooperation with the American Volksport Association (AVA) and is open to everyone. The outing will have the flavor of the growing European sport of volksmarching, or folk-walks, family events that turn out thousands of walkers each week-end throughout Europe. This is the third year the Columbia club has sponsored an October walk. Their purpose is to . . . encourage physical fitness, promote fellowship and to enjoy the outdoors. Two separate three-mile long trails are marked within the city limits. A shorter one-mile long descriptive historical walk is also available. The walks all features historical sites including several associated with the Civil War. This years walk commemorates Columbian Colonel Frank Wolford, who was commander of the 1st Kentucky Calvary during the Civil War. Colonel Wolfords grave marker in the city cemetery is included in the walk. Families of all ages are invited. As is the tradition, the event will go on rain or shine. Both segments of the walk begin and end at the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce building, 201 Burkesville street, just one block off the square. Walkers may start anytime between 8:00 and 11:00 a.m.(CDT.) Many members of the AVA travel miles to participate in their organizations sanctioned walks and register each walk they take. While those persons are charged a $3.00 fee to have their participation registered, there is no fee for casual walkers who will be the majority of those participating. Members of the Lindsey Wilson College track and cross country teams will assist as trail monitors and marshals. Water and soft drinks will be available at check points on the trails, and a variety of food will be available on the square. The walk is part of Columbias Downtown Days Festival on the square, which includes arts and crafts, food, games and a variety of entertainment.
