Mystery photo contest Number Two gets underway

By Ed Waggener

UPDATE: 10/03/2004: Award Doubled in This Contest!
So far, it doesn't appear that we have the complete answer to announce the winner of Mystery photo contest Number Two.

Rollin and Stella McQueary appear to have all but one cheerleader identified, and we believe they have correctly answered the other questions about the photo. The one answer they have not supplied is the name of the standing cheerleader.

If anyone out there in cyberland can complete the puzzle, we'll again announce two winners. Both the first person who completes theidentification and sends us the information and Rollin and Stella McQueary will receive a copy of the Haven Gillespie biography, "Driftingand Dreaming."

The Second William L. Willis, Esq., Photo Identification Competition is now underway. It's called "Name the Cheerleaders Contest." The photo is at the end of this article.

The winners of the first contest were Ann (Ann Sutton) Heskamp Curtis, California, and Rollin McQueary, Campbellsville. Ann Curtis answered the specific question posed by Mr. Willis, and Rollin McQueary identified all the persons in the photo.

The Second William L. Willis, Esq., Photo Identification Competition features a remarkably more photogenic cast.

This Olden Times Photo is again from the archives of William L. Willis.

As usual, the winner receives a book, courtesy of E.P. Waggener & Sons, Booksellers --www.epwbooks.com.

Contest rules are below.

This time the book prize is "Drifting and Dreaming," the story of Haven Gillespie, the Kentuckian who wrote "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town."

One copy of "Drifting and Dreaming" will be awarded.

It will go to the first person to reach Contest Headquarters with the following information:
  1. By childhood names, all persons in the photograph
  2. Name of school and team nickname
  3. Where photo was taken
  4. School year
Identifiers may gratuitously identify by adult names (i.e., married names, where appropriate), and current place of residence. Send all entries to: ed@epwbooks.com .

The judgment of the administering Third Cousin Second William L. Willis, Esq., Photo Identification Competition Referees shall prevail and be final.

Whether they are right.

Or not.

Comments or partial answers are welcome. If these partial answers or comments are posted online, they may be appropriated without prejudice by the eventual winner, who may use such comments or partial answers in the competition.

NOTE: If you'd like to put your favorite Mystery Photo into the queue, make arrangements in one of the following ways: email me at ed@epwbooks.com, or phone 270-384-0612, or by mail at Columbia Magazine, PO Box 906, Columbia, KY 42728.

Winner: Name the Cheerleaders contest

2004-09-26 - Columbia, KY - Photo Courtesy. CONTEST WINNER: STELLA McQUEARY, Campbellsville, KY is a winner in the second Olden Times Photo contest. She has correctly, the judges believe, identified all but one of the cheerleaders in the photo: Photo left to right Rhoda Sue Knifley, Sharon Ballou, Nancy Ingram, Juanita Staples, Beulah Keith. The judges do not believe that Mrs. McQueary's identification of the girl standing is correct. We still need help on this one. Mrs. McQueary said, and we think she's right, that the school was Columbia Grade School, the team's nickname was Redhounds, that the photo was taken in the school gym, and that the school year was 1953-54. Mrs. McQueary will receive a copy of "Drifting and Dreaming" for her fine work. Another copy will be go to the first person who correctly identifies, in the opinion of the judges, the name of standing cheerleader. ORIGINAL CUTLINE: WILLIAM L. WILLIS, ESQ, sends this second Olden Times Photo from his archives for identification. William L. Willis, childhood denizen of the legendary Jamestown Hill neighborhood, is now a resident of Frankfort, KY. As usual, the winner receives a book, courtesy of E.P. Waggener & Sons, Booksellers, www.epwbooks.com. Contest rules are in the accompanying story.
