Players named, prizes won in mystery photo contest

The mystery ball team photo from last week has been correctly identified and prizes have been awarded . . .

By Ed Waggener

We've received two winning entries for the William L. Willis***Photo Identification Competition.

The first was from Ann Heskamp Curtis. formerly of the JamestownHill neighborhood, but now residing in California. Ann Sutton* correctly identified the person looking at the ball andnot the camera (due to a dominant Chelf shyness gene) , as "Eddie"Waggener**.

The first entry to identify the entire team and the year was fromRollin McQueary, back then of Lindsey Hill, now a resident offaraway Campbellsville, KY.

Both are receiving prizes of "When Cuba Conquered Kentucky," byMarianne Walker.

Mr. McQueary's correct answer follows:

The year was 1953-54. Front Row : Junior Alley, Bill Willis, EddieWaggener looking at the ball, Roger Pickett. Darrell Young; Glenn"Red" Nixon. Back row left to right Coach Edwards, Jimmy Chapman, Lynn"Blackie" Nixon, Dickie Matthews, Thomas Harmon, Anthony Wheatleyand Donald Upchurch.

Mr. Willis is furnishing a few more photos which will be posted soon.

*Ann Sutton Heskamp Curtis, who always knows the caller is fromColumbia when they ask to speak to "Ann Sutton."

**Properly, and only, Ed Waggener, not "Eddie." Though Adair CountyHigh School General Science teacher Mary Lucy Lowe said, "Ed is not aname. You are Edward, Edmund, or Edwin. Not Ed. Ed is not a name."

***a/k/a (in last century) Billy Logan Willis.

Can you name these players?

2004-09-19 - Columbia, KY - Photo courtesy. WILLIAM L. WILLIS, Frankfort, formerly of this place, sent the photo above, and writes, "To the best of my memory this is the team at Columbia Grade School for the school year 1953-1954 but that will be subject to correction. I think the Grand Prize should be awarded to the first person who correctly identifies the fellow on the front row, third from left, who is looking at the ball and not the camera." The grand prize will be awarded as Mr. Willis directs, but we'd like to have all those in the photograph named, if possible. The Grand Prize is a Gift Certificate from E.P. Waggener & Sons, Booksellers, for a new copy of When Cuba Conquered Kentucky, a fitting basketball story, byMarianne Walker. If there be those who would like to contact William L. Willis, Esq., inquire at ed@epwbooks.com.
