Great Seattle-to-Gradyville bike ride is underway Tom Waggener is coming home. From Kagoshima, Japan, to Adair County. By bike to Tokyo. By air to Seattle, WA, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. By bike again to Gradyville, KY, on the coast of Big Creek. He sent this report around midnight, September 9, 2004: Today I start my big journey east. It's a bit late and I shouldn't be taking this extra time to right such frivolities, but I do so love you people. I'll be heading out of Bellingham, around the lake and down to The Twenty. The folks at The Twenty say its a great road for biking and very scenic. I will most likely be staying at a campsite tonight, but if a cheap Motel Six with a shower should happen to get in my way, I dare say I won't be able to say no to it.. Last night, September 10, 2004, the bike trek broke at Marblemount, WA, where Tom had a room with hot shower, free popcorn, cable Tv, and a coffee maker at the Totem Trail Motel there. This is Tom Waggener's third major cross country trip, and by far his most ambitious. A few years ago, he road across South Carolina, from Tryon, N.C., to Charleston, S.C.. A little later, he flew from Japan to Toronto and then biked, against the prevailing winds, from Toronto to New Washington, IN, in sight of the Louisville night skyline. He was accompanied on that trip by his brother Pen Waggener to the border, and by John Cox the entire trip. The Great Seattle-to-Gradyville ride is expected to take a month, or maybe a while longer. It's around 2600 miles, he reckons. More will be posted as the ride progresses, with maybe a picture or so.Encouragement, comments, or contrary advice may be emailed to Tom Waggener at this address: tom@treespotting.com This story was posted on 2004-09-10 08:44:56
