Flower pot vacancy -- wren family moves on

Reader Shirley Matney says that a little wren family spent time with her this summer but is leaving now, along with the month of August and all of its record setting cold weather and rain. She writes:

Ive really enjoyed watching a family of wrens who chose to build their nursery in one of my flower pots on the back porch this summer. It was good to look out toward the pond and catch their movement on the porch.

They raised three or four babies, I didnt try to get close enough to count in fear of making them leave early. It has been good to have them with me in this interesting month of cold-instead-of-hot weather. Usually August leaves the yard brown but the unusual amount of rain has kept the grass green and growing all through the summer.

It was so interesting to learn that the father wren works just as hard as the mother to feed their babies. Sadly, they vacated their flower pot home on August 25th. They still fly around when I go outside, trying to distract me from their little ones, so it tells me theyre still on the farm, but are in the process of bringing the babies up and don't want distractions.

I will miss them.
