Merle P. Reed, 76, Veteran, business owner

Grissom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Merle Reed who passed away at his home on Fortune Street in Columbia on Wednesday, August 18, 2004.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 20.

He was a Veteran of World War II and was owner of the Dairy Queen on Jamestown Street for many years before retirement. Merle was preceded in death by his wife Bobbie Wethington Reed in 1996.


He was the son of the late Edgar and Madge Reed and a member of the Columbia Union Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by:
  • His brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Montra Wethington of Columbia

  • Three nieces: Polly and her husband Preston McLain of Evarts, Kentucky; Stephanie and her husband Ted Davis of Corbin, Kentucky and Cheryl and her husband Andy Cermnera of Plano, Texas

  • Four great nephews: Michael McLain, Benton, Evan and Corey Davis, and Amanda Wilson; special great niece Laurel Davis; and one great-great niece, Elizabeth Jane Davis.
Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday morning, August 21, at 11 a.m. at Columbia Cemetery with Rev. Dwight Forderhase officiating. Burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Columbia-Union Presbyterian Church and may be left at the funeral home.
