She quit school at the age of 15 to marry the love of her life, Tearl Buis on October 21st, 1954 and then later completed her GED.

In March 1956 she gave birth to their first daughter Terry Jo Buis and raised her in a school bus which had been converted into a home. They then moved to the Garner and Louise Brock farm on Poplar Hill, which they tended, along with the Casey Stone farm. During this time they had another daughter Betsy Maria Buis Godbey in April 1962. Only a few years later they bought their current farm, where they raised cattle, hogs, tobacco and peppers. In January 1976 their third and final daughter Tina June Buis was born.

Josephine worked as both a cook and janitor at Garrett Elementary and later at Jones Park. She and her late husband worked side by side both on the farm and in the school system for the majority of their 52-year marriage.

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Marie Black (Bernal) Phelps, Laura Mable Black (infant) Barbara Jean Black Warren, Junie Lucille Black (Herb) Statham and brothers Roy (Toots) Black, Russell "Dude" (Neva) Black and Franklin Lafon (Freida) Black and sister in law Donna Black.
