Kentucky Youth Advocates announce Fellows From Lacey McNary, MSW KYA Policy Analyst and Fellowship Coordinator Kentucky Youth Advocates recently selected Linda Marcum Waggener of Columbia as one of 10 Fellows chosen from across the state. The KYA Children's Health Advocacy Fellowship is a unique opportunity forcitizens who are interested in children's health issues to affect positivechange at the state and local levels. This group of fellows will become a base of trained community level children's health advocates. The fellowship training includes information about media advocacy, child well-being data, the legislative process, policy advocacy, electoral advocacy and the state budget process. By completing three advocacy assignments over the course of the program, the fellows will begin to learn how to integrate advocacy into their personal and professional lives. Waggener, a publisher, a mom and grandma, says she is most interested in seeing improvements in children's emotional health and self esteem in southcentral Kentucky and looks forward to working with the KYA program. One of her main concerns is the recent Annie E. Casey Foundation KIDS COUNT statistic which shows that 1 in 5 young adults in Kentucky are not working, not attending school and have no degree beyond high school. This is the third worst rate in the country. This story was posted on 2004-07-08 15:07:48
