Honoring fathers

On Sunday, June 20, we honor fathers. Two role models in the community are father and son Raymond and David Martin.

Rev. Raymond Martin, retired minister of the Columbia Christian Church, helped raise five children: David, Steve, Richard, Becky and Barbara. Of the five, two are ministers and one is married to a minister. In retirement Rev. Martin now enjoys being a grandparent and being in demand as a guest speaker at churches around the country.

His son David Martin calls himself the 'black sheep of his family because he is not a minister' however, friends and family would tell you that he ministers with his good works.

It would be hard to find a harder working volunteer for his community, or a harder working dad for his son Blake Burris Martin, ACHS senior, and daughter McKenzie Brook Martin, 11, a sixth grader at John Adair.

David's volunteer efforts have been cut back now so he can have even more time with Blake as he transitions into young adulthood. According to David's mother-in-law Joyce Rodgers, the whole family travels a lot in support of Blake who is really excelling on the Kentucky Elite basketball team.

We'll try to have more reports on Blake's team's activity as the year progresses.

To all fathers including these two, we say, "Thanks" -- your love and caring are important factors in bringing the next generation successfully into adulthood.
