Alicia Kemnitz named Coaching for Significance award recipient

By Chris Wells

Bowling Green, KY - Lindsey Wilson College men and women's swimming coach Alicia Kemnitz has been named a 2019-20 Mid-South Conference Coaching for Significance award recipient, conference officials announced on Wednesday.

The honor is the first for Kemnitz and the first for a Lindsey Wilson coach since the inception of the award in 2015-16.

"It's an honor to be recognized by the conference for this award," Kemnitz said. "I, like most of my peers, have always viewed my calling to coach to be about much more than just my sport. As a coach of collegiate student-athletes, I have a unique opportunity to guide them in bridging the gap between childhood and adulthood. My goal then is to help build confident, responsible, and well-rounded adults when they leave LWC. To accomplish this, I strive to develop and maintain a character-first program, where my student-athletes are given opportunities to learn and grow in a safe, but challenging environment.

"I am lucky to work at an institution where this focus is supported and praised beyond win and loss records," Kemnitz added. "Additionally, I feel very blessed to call my fellow MSC swim coaches my friends. I have an immense amount of respect for each of them, as they have challenged me to be a better coach both in terms of competitiveness and, more importantly, in relation to my growth as a person of character. Our team slogan this year was based on the following quote, by which I try to live, '...but in the discrepancy that falls between what one is and what one could be, therein lies the greatest challenge...' We all must strive to "Rise to the Challenge" -- This is my goal as a coach and, I hope, the goal of my swimmers both now and when they leave the sport."

Kemnitz and the Lindsey Wilson swimming programs help fight pediatric cancer with its annual Hour of Power Relay for sarcoma research. They are also involved in tackling worldwide hunger by canvassing the local community to raise funds for Heifer International.

"Alicia always emphasizes the importance of character-driven athletics and community service within her team," Lindsey Wilson athletics director Willis Pooler said. "She is a woman of integrity who is bright and has an enormous drive to succeed in her professional and personal life. I'm most proud of the way she mentors our student-athletes and helps prepare them for life after swimming. She produces wins in sport and life."

In addition to her work in bringing awareness to pediatric cancer and hunger, Kemnitz and her team work tirelessly within the local community. Lindsey Wilson swimming partners with Green River Corp of Engineers in trail restoration and clean-up, works with the local elementary school in an after-school program, and developed a water-safety presentation for the youth.

"First of all, I want to congratulate Alicia on recently defending her thesis and completing her doctorate. That is no simple accomplishment, especially with coaching two teams and at a very high level of success," MSC Commissioner Eric Ward said. "She is a steady and convincing voice in the conference for women's issues, including student-athletes, coaches, and administrators. Alicia sets a high standard for herself and her student-athletes; she is quick to accept responsibility, and rarely seeks credit or praise. She is an outstanding recipient for the Coaching for Character Award."
