Joe Kerns, 77, Columbia, KY (1942-2020)

Joe Kerns of Columbia completed his earthly journey on Friday, May 29, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was 77 years old.

Joe has chosen cremation, and no visitation or services are planned at this time. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

He was born August 18, 1942, in Adair County, to the late Hobert and Pearl Coffey Kerns. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Glenn, Isham (Little Bud), Charlie and Leroy Kerns and three sisters, Alta Burnett, Allene Burton and Dorothy Kerns.

Joe served in the United States Army, was a mechanic, carpenter, farmer, owned and operated Kerns Grocery, Kerns Auction and a licensed Barber. Joe was a man of many talents but mostly he was an honest man. If he gave you his word, you could take it to the bank and if he was your friend he had your back. He loved helping people and sharing any knowledge he had with anyone when he thought he would help. He loved playing pranks and scaring his grandkids. He was a long-standing member of the Lewis Lodge in Louisville, the Shriners and Sottish Rite.

Joe leaves behind:
  • His wife of 55 years, Sandra Caldwell Kerns of Columbia
  • Two daughters - Michele Kerns Schneider (Reed) of Nicholasville, Melissa Caldwell (special friend Stevie) of Columbia
  • Six grandchildren - Mark, Amanda, Bianca, Jared, James and Mia Grace
  • Seven great-grandchildren - Chey, Brianna, Logan, Blake, Abby, Kasen and Fiona
  • Two great-great grandchildren - Trey and Adalyn
  • One brother - Dallas Kerns of Cox's Creek
  • One sister - Mable Barnes of Bardstown
The family would like to thank Hosparus Green River and his special nurse, Kelly.
