Governor says yes to bypass around Columbia By Stacey Bailey, Director of Economic Development The Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce organized a visit to our State capitol on February 12. Thirteen Chamber members made the trip to Frankfort. Our day was filled with tours, greetings and handshakes, photo ops, lunch (of course), observation of the legislative session in both the House and Senate, and meetings. Our first stop in Frankfort was the Governors mansion. We were given a tour of the first level of the home that was built in 1914. The mansion has been the residence of every governor since that time including our current governor, Ernie Fletcher. After our tour we took some time out for lunch in the Capitol cafeteria before resuming the days activities. Next on the list of things to do was to pose for a photo with Representative Russ Mobley in the Capitol rotunda. We were also able to briefly shake hands with Senator Vernie McGaha before touring the Capitol building. Following our building tour, we proceeded to the House of Representatives to observe our legislature in action. Amidst the busy workings of the House, Speaker of the House and Adair County native Jody Richards publicly recognized our group at the request of Congressman Mobley. We were also able to pay a brief visit to the Senate. Next on our agenda was a meeting with Secretary of Transportation Clay Bailey and Congressman Mobley. Adair County native Asa Swan was also in attendance serving as Legislative liaison for the Department of Transportation. We spoke to Secretary Bailey about our transportation needs and concerns for Columbia and Adair County. Our discussion was primarily about the much needed Columbia bypass and the reconstruction of KY-61 south of Columbia with a second interchange at the Cumberland Parkway. The Secretary informed the group that the KY-61 project has been delayed due to funding issues, but that the plans for the road will remain the same. Secretary Bailey was optimistic about the Columbia bypass citing that the project is federally funded therefore less likely to be delayed because of funding. We then met with the President of the Senate David Williams from Burkesville. Senator Williams is very supportive of the KY-61 project which provides better access to the Cumberland Parkway for both Columbia and Burkesville. He also commented on our 'United for a Bypass' signs that he noticed on his way to Frankfort from Burkesville. He was supportive of the bypass project as well. Our final stop was Senator Vernie McGaha's office. He was interested in learning about what the Secretary of Transportation had informed us. He was very pleased with the outcome of our meetings and pledged his support for the community. At the end of the day we were all a little tired, but we left with a sense of accomplishment and optimism. The Chamber of Commerce was very pleased to be able to sponsor this legislative day to serve the needs of Columbia and Adair County. This story was posted on 2004-02-29 12:48:01
