Adventures on islands and in kitchens

By Linda Waggener

I always encouraged both sons, Pen and Tom, to follow their dreams without having any idea that they'd take me to places I could never have imagined.

Postcards and e-mail notes from my son Tom help me experience island adventures until some point in the future when the budget actually allows me to travel to places like Japan. Tom promises that this is his third and final year there as he finishes up his term in the JET Programme. He went to the southern part of Japan for one year but found the country and the people much to his liking so he kept working there and riding his bike and exploring, and happily, sharing the news from that side of the world with us.

Meanwhile, on this side of the world, Grandsons Graham and Evan, Pen and Amy's unique creations, help me re-discover one square inch of home at a time with awe and delight. At ages two and seven months, even a single dust mote floating on a ray of winter sunshine is a thing of importance for which time must stop so it can be focused on and discussed. We're discovering things like hot biscuits, squirrels playing across bare limbs in beech trees, snowflakes and basketball games in the garage when it's too cold to go outside. And, best of all, hugs and laughter are everywhere! I remember hearing a bit of news once that little children laugh over three hundred times a day while grown-ups only average seventeen or so. Is why we grow into a second childhood as we get older and gain wisdom of what really matters?
