Food for all who are hungry at the Food Pantry

By Linda Waggener

"If you're hungry," says Robert Flowers, "and you need help with food, just show up at the Adair Food Pantry, 203 South Monroe Street, Columbia, KY on Tuesday mornings between 9am-12pmCT and you'll get food."

He and the volunteers say there is food a plenty right now and they hope to provide anyone who has a need. Any extra food is given to JOY Ministries for distribution.

In May the Food Pantry will open one evening a month, on Tuesdays, from 4pm-7pmCT to help those who can't come in the morning hours.

They also have plenty of food contributed through the Hunters for the Hungry program coordinated by Jones Chapel United Methodist Church. They are down to the last batch of deer meat from last season.

The Food Pantry caters to senior citizens, disabled Veterans, and hungry children. They are required to keep certain records but no one turned away. As a rule, if you're hungry, they make sure you have food and they never run out.

Helping hungry kids is a mission they receive and store school Back Pack foods for students, working with Steve Turner and Robbie Harmon. Feeding America got a grant to expand food for hungry kids through summer months when school is not in session.

Ivy Collins French and the Columbia Christian Church founded the Food Pantry, the only one in Adair with government backing, in 2003. Is it sponsored through USDA and Feeding America.

Robert said the workers on the job this week - including Barb Trumpis, Mimi Bairstow, Nan Fudge and Michelle Fruth - need a "Heros at Work" sign.
