LCDHD: Why we're assuming the virus is already widespread The assumption that COVID-19 is already widespread is made because of the number of confirmed cases from the limited testing so far, and the knowledge gained from other locations on how very, very easy it is to spread person-to-person. By Jelaine Harlow Lake Cumberland District Health Department We believe and work with the premise that COVID 19 is widespread, because that assumption is the best way to protect the health of our community. Although the risk of severe illness may be different for everyone, anyone can get and spread COVID-19. Everyone has a role to play in slowing the spread and protecting themselves, their family, and their community. (CDC.gov) The Lake Cumberland District Health Department (LCDHD) at the current time has experienced 115 Positive/Presumptive Positive cases in our 10-county district. Regardless of the confirmed case count for any Lake Cumberland County, we believe COVID-19 to be widespread. LCDHD is working with the Kentucky Department for Public Health to identify and contact all those who may have come in contact with the confirmed cases. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact (within about 6 feet) for a prolonged period. Spread happens when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and droplets from their mouth or nose are launched into the air and land in the mouths or noses of people nearby. The droplets can also be inhaled into the lungs. Recent studies indicate that people who are infected but do not have symptoms likely also play a role in the spread of COVID-19. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes. However, this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. COVID-19 can live for hours or days on a surface, depending on factors such as sun light and humidity. Social distancing helps limit contact with infected people and contaminated surfaces. Contact investigation reveals that COVID 19 does and has spread through close contact. Testing has been limited to people who meet certain criteria. However, we are beginning to have more testing available and expect to have more positive cases from more testing. An example of wide community spread would be finding through contact investigation that several people from one church service contracted COVID 19 or someone gets sick and has no idea who they contracted it from. Not everyone who has COVID 19 becomes sick however they can still spread the virus to others. This story was posted on 2020-04-16 10:27:39
