Around the Coffee Table

by Geniece Marcum
I was reminded recently of a story about Louis Reece that goes back several years to the time when he worked as a clerk at Polson-Vanzant Hardware, in Edmonton. It was told many times, and most recently shared in his Eulogy delivered by Attorney Herb Sparks.
The story goes that while Louis was at work in the front of the hardware store one day, a customer came in and said he needed to buy half a stove pipe.

Without a word Louis turned and headed for the back of the old store where such things were kept in stock.

Now there was no such thing as half a stove pipe, which meant the thing would have to be cut to the customers requirements; and anyone who ever wrestled a tin pipe while trying to cut it, would surely have appreciated the expression on Louis face just then.

At work in the back of the store was his employer, the late Albert Vanzant. Albert, Louis said, Some damned fool out here wants to buy half a stove pipe....

Too late, Louis realized his customer had followed him, and was standing right behind him as he spoke.

Without missing a beat, the quick witted Louis turned and, laying an arm around the customers shoulders, added, ...and this fine young gentleman here wants to buy the other half!
