Winter has officially begun even if you can't tell it

Winter officially began on December 22nd. That means there will soon be snow and ice to deal with even though you couldn't tell it by Christmas day weather. This has been one of the warmest and brightest holidays on record. Mother nature has already given us a glimpse of freezing temperatures and spitting snow, however, and its always good to take a few preventive steps early to assure that things will go as smoothly as possible when winter weather really gets serious.

AROUND HOME: Wrap pipes that could freeze with heat tapes. Have your heating system checked so it doesnt go out at the worst possible time. Keep a good supply of food and water in the house so driving on dangerous roads will not be necessary. Think of any other type of emergency that could occur and plan ahead for it.

VEHICLES: Get a tune-up now to assure that the car will start in cold weather. Tires should have good tread and your mechanic can advise you on the parts that are affected most by freezing and need checking before temps drop.

PERSONAL: Be prepared with non-slip boots. Walk with care. Use hand rails on steps.

Be safe and happy wintering!
