Update: Bam Carney is getting better overall

Kentucky House Majority Floor Leader John "Bam" Carney's condition is updated on day 79 in intensive care at Norton Hospital in Louisville. John Chowning shared the comments below from Mark Carney:

"Bam continues to be in the ICU unit at Norton's in downtown Louisville, where he has been for 79 days now. Overall, he is getting better, but his road to recovery is a tough and long road.

"We were told Saturday that Klebsiella (a bacteria that we all have and is considered a good bacteria when it is in the gut as it should be) was in his blood and in some pockets of infection in his belly area. When it is outside the intestines, this bacteria can cause serious infection.

While the infection numbers for Bam had gotten better toward the end of last week, they have climbed back up the last three days and were at 17.5 this morning.

"They took him back downstairs on Friday and used a needle to drain a pocket of fluid from the stomach area and wound up putting another drain in that area to allow the fluid/infection to continue to drain. Surgeons are planning a drain study either tomorrow morning or Thursday morning. The study would help them determine if they would be able to remove any other drains from his stomach area at this time.

"Physical therapy went well yesterday and today. He was able to sit on the side of the bed for nearly 22 minutes. We know this process is going to be a long process and while the 22 minutes is great they remind us that it will still be some time before he is able to get back on his feet.

"So this week we ask for specific prayers for Bam's attitude, patience, spirits and willpower for the road ahead and we ask for your continued prayers in dealing with the infection for both Bam and the doctors. Thank you and God Bless!!"
