NCP completes $30k state-of-the-art compounding lab

North Century Pharmacy (NCP), located at 3058 Campbellsville Rd, Columbia, KY, recently executed a major upgrade to its compounding operations in order to serve an ever-growing population throughout the Commonwealth. The new lab was designed by Easton Bryant, PharmD. Dustin Martin and Jon Beard of Bluegrass Custom Concepts, a construction group based in Columbia, completed the project.

Aside from creating the space itself, the pharmacy also acquired a wide array of equipment to fill the state-of-the-art lab. "We had twice outgrown different areas in the pharmacy where we were compounding," says Bryant, "and we realized it was time to go all-in and construct this room to fit our needs." He continued, "It's a major investment, but it's for a unique service in which an increasing number of providers and patients are finding value, so it was an obvious next-step for us."

Prescription compounding is the process of combining, mixing, or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. Compounded meds are typically necessary when a patient has difficulty using commercially-available products, requires a dosage that is different from the standard drug strengths, or has failed therapy with typical meds.

Bryant says customizing medications is a different approach to patient care, and it's a concept he's passionate about. "I explain it as part science, part art. Often times, a provider reaches out to us and we work together to reach a solution that will best suit the patient's needs. What I love about it most is we're getting back to the core of pharmacy, which is the triad relationship between the patient, physician, and pharmacist."

While NCP is classified as a traditional retail (or community) pharmacy, they served patients or providers in 34 counties in 2019 through their compounding services with preparations for chronic pain, hormone imbalances, weight control, autoimmune disorders, and more.
