Remembering Will Dohoney By Martha Henry Berry There have been several posts about the characters who have lived in Columbia, but no one has mentioned Will Dohoney. He roamed the square in the 1940s and probably early- to mid-1950s. Will was a big man, had a speech impedediment and was slow in his thinkng. Even though he was a member of the Christian Church, he knew all the Methodist preachers for miles around. He collected small change from the people on the Square, usually asking for a nickel. Someone once asked why he didn't ask for a dime, as they were worth more. His answer was that if he did, people would stop giving him money. With the money that he collected, he bought neckties for many of the Methodist preachers on their birthdays. I don't know how he knew the preachers and certainly did not know how he knew their birthdays. Dad had several of them. I think of Will every time I drive out Fairground St. This story was posted on 2020-03-07 09:44:11
