LWC softball opens 2020 season with weekend on the road

The No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team opens its 2020 season on the road in Blue Mountain, Mississippi. The Blue Raiders will play two games on Saturday and Sunday, each day will feature a game against Blue Mountain (MS) and Brescia (KY). First pitch against Blue Mountain is set for 1pmCT at BMC Sportsplex.

Lindsey Wilson will then travel to Gardendale, AL, for a doubleheader on Feb. 23 starting at 2pmCT against Stillman College (AL).

The Blue Raiders finished their 2019 campaign with a 52-5 record. LWC won the Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament before winning its NAIA National Championship Opening Round site to advance to the 39th Annual NAIA Softball World Series.



Lindsey Wilson finished last season ranked second in the NAIA in home runs per game averaging 1.30, third in fielding percentage with 97.3 and sixth in slugging percentage, boasting an impressive 54.2. The Blue Raiders ranked seventh in four categories, including total runs batted in (358), runs batted in per game (6.28), earned run average (1.64) and total batters struck out (341).

Annabelle Ramirez pitched 142.1 innings for the Blue Raiders, accumulating a team-high 176 strikeouts and finished the season ranked sixth in opponent batting average (15.7). Hannah Epperson finished last season ranked sixth nationally with a 1.06 ERA, pitching 98.2 innings for Lindsey Wilson.

Makea-Al Kaluau returns as the team's leader in RBIs per game (1.07), home runs (15) and slugging percentage (72.7). The Blue Raiders also return Jaydee Boursaw who notched 14 home runs, 47 RBIs and a 62.0 slugging percentage last season.

Blue Mountain (4-0) enters Saturday's matchup after a perfect opening weekend, picking up a couple of wins over both Talladega College (Ala.) and Missouri Baptist. The Toppers handed Talladega its two losses with the scores of 8-2 and 14-2, while defeating the Spartans 3-1 and 4-3 in eight innings.

So far this season, the Toppers are led by Katie Rutledge with her eight hits, five RBIs and four runs scored. Meagan Edmonds boasts a very impressive 88.9 slugging percentage, recording five hits including a triple and double, with just nine at-bats. Montanna Smith leads from the pitching position, having pitched 15.0 innings and notching 15 strikeouts and a 1.40 ERA.

The Blue Raiders and Toppers have met twice before. The most recent meeting was on March 2, 2018 and resulted in a 9-0 LWC victory in five innings. Lindsey Wilson leads the series 2-0.

Brescia (0-2) returns to action after dropping its opening season doubleheader against Campbellsville (Ky.) on Monday. The Bearcats dropped game one 0-7 and the second game 1-15.

The Bearcats return 16 players from last season's squad. Cassie Moss returns as one of the team's most valuable hitters. Moss recorded team-high numbers in doubles (15), RBIs (9), home runs (4) and slugging percentage (66.1). Lauren Willett is back as the team's primary pitcher. Last season she pitched 137.1 innings recording 65 strikeouts and a 2.50 ERA.

This weekend marks the eighth and ninth meetings between the two programs. Last season's double-header resulted in a pair of Lindsey Wilson victories with the final scores of 2-0 and 13-3. The Blue Raiders lead the all-time series 7-0.

Stillman (5-1) hosted Union (Ky.) in a four-game series last weekend. The Tigers dropped the first game of the series 1-6 before winning the remaining three 6-2, 2-1 and 1-0.

The Tigers are led offensively by Katie Heaps with her eight hits, five RBIs, and five runs scored. Shakira Doss boasts a 57.1 on-base percentage while also recording three RBIs and five runs scored. Ragen Yarbrough is 3-0 from the circle and features a 2.33 ERA for the Tigers while accumulating one shutout so far this season.

This will be the first meeting between the Blue Raiders and Tigers. The teams were scheduled to play in 2018 but were rained out.
