Exhibit Shows Creative Side of Lindsey Wilson Faculty

A new art exhibit shows the creative side of Lindsey Wilson College's humanities faculty. "A Sense of Place" features works and creations by members of the college's humanities faculty. The exhibit is on display through October 22 in the Lucretia C. Begley Art Gallery.

"We have a variety of art expressions demonstrated by our faculty -- painting, sculpture, writing, music and photography," said Tim Smith, this year=s gallery director and Lindsey Wilson associate professor of art. "It is important to expose our students and community to quality visual arts as well as give artists the opportunity to share their work."

The work displayed in the exhibit reflects the diverse backgrounds and interests of the college's humanities faculty.

Lori Sargent, an associate professor of art and education, displays her talents in sculpture and interpretation. Her work features hand-crafted coffee mugs, tea cups and tea bags in several collage displays.

"The experience of having coffee or tea is a metaphor for friendship," Sargent said.

Other exhibit contributors include Associate Professor of English Morris Grubbs, who has displayed his black-and-white photography. The shots include pictures from his native Cumberland County, Ky., and two stunning shots of Chartres Cathedral in France.

Photography is also the theme of works by George Kolbenschlag, assistant professor of English/journalism, except Kolbenschlag explores the dynamics of digital photography in his work.

Associate Professor of Music Gerald Chaffin provides examples of music as an expression of art, and Associate Professor of English Carolyn Keefe has provided some of her writings along with several pieces of original photography. And Smith has displayed some of his recent landscape paintings.

"I feel this has been a good showing of faculty art this year," Smith said. "Not often do our faculty get the opportunity to present a part of their own personal collection. People need to know that our instructors have many talents and can teach not only in the classroom, but they also teach by sharing a part of their own personal interests and experiences."

"A Sense of Place," by Lindsey Wilson humanities faculty, can be viewed from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, through October 22, in the Lucretia C. Begley Art Gallery. For more information, contact Lindsey Wilson Associate Professor of Art Tim Smith at info@lindsey.edu or (270) 384-8079.
