Local NP earns national Mental Health Specialty certification

By Stacey Biggs

Alisha Risen CPNP-PC, PMHS has earned the national added qualifications credential of Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Specialist(PMHS) after successfully passing the rigorous PMHS exam from the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. To date, there are fewer than 400 PMHS experts in the United States.

PMHS is a specialty certification focusing on the area of child and adolescent behavioral and mental health within primary care settings. She has acquired additional knowledge to evaluate, treat and manage many common behavioral and mental health concerns within the clinic. This also includes providing patients with access to community resources, such as mental health therapist, psychologist, and other partners in a child's care.

Alisha has been a practicing Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner since 2016 with T.J. Health Columbia, and before that as a pediatric nurse for 24 years.

She is accepting new patients in both the T.J. Health Greensburg and T.J. Health Columbia Primary Care Clinics. "I love tiny humans and as I began caring for them in my community I was seeing a reoccurring problem of little access to pediatric primary care mental health services. Sometimes patients are waiting 6 months or longer for a diagnosis and treatment and this was unacceptable to me. My journey with patients many times start at birth until late adolescents. I felt an obligation to my patients to obtain the added training and certification of PMHS so that I could be a well-rounded provider and offer a much needed service in my community."

Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Specialists benefit children in the community, especially with the lack of mental health services in our rural communities.
