LWC Wrestling falls to CU 25-18 in the Battle of Highway 55

By Christopher Coombs

The No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson College wrestling team fell to Campbellsville University 25-18 on Wednesday evening during the Battle of Highway 55 at Biggers Sports Center.

Cagen Wallace (No. 6 at 125) opened the night with a six-point win when Campbellsville forfeited the opening 125-pound match.

After a scoreless first period, Sam Bacon took control of his match in the second frame against Kolten Randaz (No. 9 at 133). Bacon used a series of four-point near falls to build a 10-0 lead. The freshman powered his way to a tech fall victory by a final score of 16-1 during the third period while accumulating over two minutes of ride time.

Trent Johnson lost to Dayton Marvel (No. 6 at 141) after battling his nationally-ranked opponent to a close 5-4 decision. Zane Brown took on Michael Diemer (No. 12 at 149) where he lost on an 8-0 major decision to cut the LWC lead to 11-7.

Derrick Smallwood (No. 2 at 157) dominated Tristan Sellmer (No. 19 at 157) on a 12-0 major decision. Smallwood scored a late takedown, adding a two-point near fall to end the first period with a 4-0 advantage. The sophomore added and escape -- after starting the second period down -- and a takedown late in the period to take control of the match at 7-0 after two. Smallwood added another takedown, a two-point near fall and a ride time point in the final stanza to claim the major decision.

Joe Koontz (No. 14 at 165) battled Chandler Woenker (No. 16 at 165) to a 2-2 tie after the first three periods. A Woenker takedown in the sudden-victory one period gave the Tigers a 4-2 decision win. Mahlic Sallah (No. 18 at 174) of Campbellsville pulled the Tigers within two points at 15-13 when he upset Trajan Hurd (No. 6 at 174) on a close 7-6 decision.

Trevor Lawson (No. 4 at 184) defeated David Richardson on a 1-0 decision after scoring the only point of the match on an escape early in the second period.

Zach Linton (No. 7 at 197) pinned Carlos Figueroa to pull the Tigers ahead in the match 19-18 with just one match remaining. Campbellsville would win the dual 25-18 after an injury default win during the heavyweight match.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Tuesday when they welcome Thomas More (Ky.) to Biggers Sports Center at 7pmCT.
