ACHS Academic Team District Champs for 15th year

In addition to the team win, Adair County Champions earned individual awards in every single Written Assessment event.

By Brett Reliford

The Adair County High School Academic Team competed in the 2020 Governor's Cup District Championship on Saturday, January 25, and the group walked away as the District Champions once again.

The Quick Recall team swept through all rounds of their portion of the tournament undefeated. The Future Problem Solving Team also earned straight 1st Place scores to earn a championship in their division.

This is the team's 15th District Championship in a row in Governor's Cup competition, a feat only achieved by a number of teams that can almost be counted on one hand in the history of Governor's Cup competition.

In addition to the team events, Adair earned individual awards in every single Written Assessment event. Senior Keaton Coomer recorded his highest competition score to date in Math, taking home 1st Place in the event. In fact, Coomer's score is the highest score anyone has gotten in the entire District since the 1990s and the 2nd highest score ever for the District. In Math, Junior Timothy Archey earned 3rd Place in the event in his first year of academic competition, and Senior Alex Godsey won 5th Place to complete the ACHS trio of Top 5 placements.

Another team record was achieved in Language Arts as Senior Maddie Harmon won 1st Place. Harmon tied former Adair County competitor Heather Jackson for the highest score ever achieved in the District on the Language Arts test. Freshman Alannah Bowman finished in 2nd Place in the event, and Senior Elizabeth Rexroat won 3rd place for a 1-2-3 Adair County finish in the competition.

Adair County also completed a 1-2-3 victory in Arts and Humanities. Freshman Alannah Bowman got her second individual medal of the competition, securing an impressive 1st Place score in just her first year of high school competition. Maddie Harmon followed up in 2nd Place for her second medal of the day as well. Senior Ty Cheatham won one of his two medals on the day by capturing 3rd Place in the event.

Ty Cheatham put up an impressive score in his individual Science competition to pair with his Arts and Humanities finish. Cheatham won 1st Place in the District in the Science category, earning him his 3rd medal in a row in this event dating back to his Sophomore season.

In Social Studies, Junior Hayden Hancock brought home a 3rd Place medal after a competition season of hard work and dedication to the goal of advancing to region in a very competitive field of participants this year.

In the Composition competition, Adair County finished with another maximum of 3 medal winners. Keaton Coomer earned his second individual medal and won 3rd Place in the event. Sophomore Amber Loy earned 4th Place, and Alex Godsey also earned a second medal in District by finishing in 5th Place.

All individual medal winners go on to compete at the Region Championships to be held at South Warren High School in Bowling Green on February 15. Quick Recall team members were Keaton Coomer, Maddie Harmon, Ty Cheatham, Hayden Hancock, Alex Godsey, Alannah Bowman, Timothy Archey, and Samantha Feduccia. The team would also like to recognize Freshman Elizabeth Smith who has contributed to the team is a huge way in just her first year of competition. Smith was unable to attend the event, but the impact of her effects on the team throughout this season helped push the team to another successful finish.

Members of this year's 1st Place Future Problem Solving team were Amber Loy, Sadie Kemp, Samuel Kemp, and Samantha Feduccia. Those competitors will advance to Region Championships along with the Quick Recall team in February.
