LWC Men's Basketball falls short against No. 1 Georgetown

By Christopher Coombs

Georgetown, KY - The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team pulled within two points midway through the second half but would fall short in their upset bid against No. 1-ranked Georgetown 97-81 at the Davis-Reed Alumni Gym.

Six Blue Raiders (14-8, 3-5 MSC) finished the game in double figures as Reece Brooks led the way with 18 points and seven assists. Payton Cundiff finished with 16 as Matthew Eldridge just missed out on a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Malik Hart had 12 points, Avery Edwards had 11 and Kel Stotts managed 10.

The Blue Raiders shot an even 50 percent from the floor including a 42.1 mark from three but the Tigers (19-0, 8-0 MSC) were slightly more efficient, knocking down 55.2 percent of their attempts. Georgetown controlled the glass outrebounding LWC 38-26.

Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the game over the first two minutes before engaging in a back-and-forth battle to the 10:21 mark. Over the span, there were four lead changes and three ties. The final tie came at 21 off an Eldridge three.

Georgetown pushed on, scoring 11 straight points over the next two minutes to a 32-21 lead. The Blue Raiders managed to trim their deficit to as few as seven points at 37-30 with just over two minutes to play before a 10-3 run by the Tigers put the Blue Raiders behind 47-33 at the break.

The Blue Raiders charged out of the gate in the second half outscoring Georgetown 17-7 over the first five minutes of play. Cundiff pulled the Blue Raiders to within four points at 54-50 off a deep three.

Georgetown responded pushing their lead to nine points four times to the 12:21 mark before LWC managed another scoring spurt. Brooks scored four points as Edwards added three to pull Lindsey Wilson within two points at 69-67 with just over 10 minutes to play.

It was as close as the Blue Raiders would get to the upset as streaky shooting and Georgetown's hot hand proved to be too much to overcome. The Tigers increased their lead to as many as 22 points in the waning minutes before taking the game 97-81.

Four Tigers finished with over 20 points as Jake Ohmer led all scorers with 25. Chris Coffey recorded a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Lindsey Wilson returns home on Thursday, Jan. 30, when they take on Cumberland (Tenn.) at 8pmCT at Biggers Sports Center.
