Senate Approves Photo ID to Vote Bill By Miranda Combs Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael G. Adams today thanked the State Senators who just passed Senate Bill 2, Secretary Adams' top legislative priority, by a lopsided 29-9 margin. The measure would for the first time require proof of identity with a Photo ID, unless the voter affirms in writing that a "reasonable impediment" prevents the voter from obtaining a Photo ID. To help ensure no one is disenfranchised, the measure provides ways for persons without a state-issued ID to get one for free. "Thanks to all the Senators who stood with me and with Kentucky voters today to make it harder to cheat in our elections," Adams said. Adams spent his pre-inauguration transition period and his first two weeks in office helping to develop the bill. In particular, Adams invited left-leaning organizations and advocates to the table in order to hear and address their concerns, and yesterday they publicly praised his efforts during a legislative hearing on the bill. For example, Corey Shapiro with the KY ACLU said, "We are very grateful for the dialogue we've had with Secretary Adams and his staff and the significant improvements made to the bill." Senate Bill 2 now heads to the House for its consideration. This story was posted on 2020-01-25 06:44:19
