Library needs help replacing tree lost in storm

A favorite tree provided both beauty and shade at the entrance of Adair County's Janice Holt Giles Memorial Library until last week's stormy weather claimed it. Now, at the prompting of a library patron, a fund drive is underway to replace what Mother Nature took away.

Staff member Lisa Burton made a sign inviting donations to help replace the beautiful Bradford Pear tree that patrons enjoyed walking under and competing for to shade their cars while they were in the library.

She told us that everyone was upset about the tree loss, including County Health Nurse Mary Keltner, an avid user of the library, who encouraged the fund raiser. The drive is underway now and if funds should be raised over and above the cost of replacing the tree, they will be applied to upgrading other landscaping around the library. The staff looks forward to Lindsey Wilson's upcoming annual Marvina Farkle day when students devote service to their community and are available to help with such chores.

Lisa, the Children's Librarian at the Adair County Public Library, reminds everyone that story hour is every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and all children invited. She says that one new program giving parents the opportunity to donate a children's book to the library in the name of their own child is getting good response.

Donations to the library may be made by stopping in for a visit, or mailing to:
307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY 42728, or

Pledges may be made by phone at

LISA BURTON and her two-and-a-half year old daughter, Devan, are leading a fund drive to replace the beautiful Bradford Pear tree which had graced the front of the library until recent storms destroyed it. The trunk that little Devan sits upon in the photo is all that is left of the tree which patrons enjoyed walking under and competing for parking under in hot weather.
