Camp H.O.P.E. is new after-school option for middle schoolers

By Chloe Thomas

A new after-school program provides activities and learning opportunities for under-served middle school students in Columbia-Adair County.

Camp H.O.P.E, which stands for Helping Outstanding Pupils Succeed, is an after-school program sponsored by Joy Ministries. The program began in September and was created for middle school students in the local community.

"There seems to be more options for area children in primary and elementary school -- and high school students already have busy after-school schedules," says program director and Lindsey Wilson College senior Erika Squires. "We felt the area really needed something for middle school students to do after school."

Squires says after-school programs historically play a key role in reducing risky behaviors, boosting academic performance and promoting physical health -- and Camp H.O.P.E. offers programming with these outcomes in mind.

"We pick up about 10 middle school students, two days a week, Mondays and Fridays. We offer training in life skills, exercise, healthy eating, and academic preparation. Classes are offered in cooking, martial arts, drama, dance, art and games."

Camp H.O.P.E. is a volunteer-led program with classes taught at Columbia United Methodist Church, primarily by students from Lindsey Wilson College. As program director, Squires does all the shopping, and provides transportation to and from the church.

"We have room for about five more in our van. We have encouraged the kids to tell their friends and we've reached out to family resource centers and teachers."

Squires hopes to expand the program to more area students but says in order to do that they will need more volunteers to run the classes.

"Volunteer opportunities are available as both assistants and class leaders. The program qualifies as service and practicum hours for Bonner Scholars and Christian ministry students."

Applications for January are available at Adair County Middle School in the Family Resource Center. Classes will resume on January 17.

"Ultimately, we hope is that this program will provide an affordable and safe opportunity for local families and their middle school children."
