Downey Eye Clinic holds open house in new location It was a proud moment for Dr. Max Downey when friends and customers joined him in ribbon cutting ceremonies at the new location of Downey Eye Clinic yesterday. Just under a hundred people visited Dr. Downey and his staff for refreshments and tours of the new facility. A move had been in consideration for natural business growth reasons, but Dr. Downey was motivated to relocate even more quickly when the rumblings began toward the possibility of the justice department buying the block of buildings from the public square down Campbellsville Street for governmental needs. Several locations were considered but the former post office on Burkesville Street was his final choice. Looking now at the refurbished building, one would be hard pressed to remember the grays and browns of the old post office. Visitors touring the new Clinic building got to see new state-of-the-art technology and products in a bright, open design. Dr. Downey says he mapped out his plan to include necessities for expanded work flow and quality with a special focus on customer comfort. He worked with local construction people and decorators to complete the renovation which has been in the works since December. "Feedback has been very rewarding," Dr. Downey says, "especially from all my patients. Their comfort and quality of care direct my every business move." Accomplishments and services Downey Eye Clinic staff is most proud of include: the glaucoma care which is "second to none". Not only do they check for visual field loss, they also analyze nerve fiber layers, which is the more sensitive test for the onset of glaucoma; and, as of December, they will have served the community with successful cataract surgeries for four years. Patients never have to leave Columbia to resolve problems with cataracts. Dr. Downey takes care of the pre-op testing, works with Dr. Mark Huffman who comes to Westlake where surgeries take place, then Dr. Downey takes care of the patient's post-op needs through the healing process. This coming September 10th marks Downey Eye Clinic's 22nd year of service in Adair County. He started with one employee on Greensburg Street, grew and expanded to Campbellsville Street across from the Municipal Building, then again in this move, expanded to double the space of his former location where today he employees eight people. They include: Laura Brummett, lab technician, who makes all the glasses (80% of all the eye wear is made here for best quality control); Paula Rose, licensed optician with 11 years experience; Amanda Slinker, receptionist and technician, Gina Campbell, insurance clerk; Rhonda Coffey, optometric assistant; Christina Cox and Teresa Shelton, receptionists; and Kim Terry, custodian.
