Journey to the Manger churches say thanks for record year Journey to the Manger, produced by Pickett's Chapel and Tarter's Chapel United Methodist Churches, was reported to have been a major success December 6-8, 2019 in Adair County. Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan said, "We want to thank everyone that came down and took the 'Journey To The Manger.' Sunday night was the biggest night of the 3-night event." Ann Smith and Lisa Coomer, of Picketts Chapel and Tarter’s Chapel United Methodist Churches respectively, organizers of the event, also send out a thank you to everyone who came to tour the one-mile Journey to the Manger 2019. Sunday night they had 303 cars and 1,081 people come through. Our 3-night total was 734 cars with 2,537 people - the most ever. They reported visitors from 18 Kentucky counties plus from California, Florida, and Honduras. Entrants were given coins so they could pay their taxes at the end of the journey. The last night was a pleasant temperature. Visitors left wishing it could go on all of December. The buildings and angel stands were built in 2012, the first time it was held. Men of both churches worked together to construct the 19 buildings. Barney Taylor, welding instructor at ACHS, lead the building of the angel stands. There’s a foot stand and a belt to go around the waist under the costumes allowing for the angels to stand for three hours approximately 8 to10 feet up in the air above the little buildings. It takes 65 to 70 volunteers and both churches provided help to cover the characters in each setting over three nights. This was the fifth year of the 1 mile journey which tells the Christmas story. The road goes across lands belonging to Junior and Chad Brown and Chuck Rogers. Ann said the congregations are thankful for their young people and friends who really make the difference in whether or not the program can be held. It takes a lot of energy and strength to do three hours each night. This story was posted on 2019-12-16 11:21:07
