Class of 1953 reunion is August 30 The Columbia High School class of 1953 will hold its reunion at Cranmer Dining Center at Lindsey Wilson on Saturday, August 30, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Senior class of 1953 history, from the yearbook In the year 1949, seventy-two green freshmen started on our journey. Sponsors Miss Frances Russell and Mrs. Paul Webb very capably led us through our first year of high school. Our carnival attendents were Ann Merkley escorted by Dan Waggener, and Betty Lou Daugherty escorted by Bobby Massie. We elected Hilda Willis to serve as our cheerleader for four years. We conducted a very successful magazine sale with Dale Randall as high salesman. The next year the surviving silly sophomores started our second year of high school under the direction of Mrs. J. W. Walker and Mrs. Demaaree Richards. Our carnival attendants were Hilda Willis escorted by Larry Stevens, and Patricia Merkley escorted by Chester Brockman. We closed the year with a trip to Wolf Creek Dam. At long last we reached the coveted position of Jolly Juniors. We chose as our carnival attendant Margaret Murrell escorted by Eddie Hatfield. We presented a play, Susie the Siren, which was directed by our sponsor, Mrs. Walker, and Mrs. Roy Owen. We entertained the seniors at Lindsey dining hall with a banquet featuring the Rose Festival. The room and program carried out the theme. Our speaker was Mr. Weldon Hall. For our annual trip, we went to Mammoth Cave. Now we are sophisticated Seniors. Our sponsors are Mrs. J. W. Walker, and Mr. Myron Cohen. Even though we have lost several members, there are still forty of us who will keep on keeping on. We are represented on the baseball team by Chester Brockman, Eddie Hatfield and Sonny Williams. We have several representatives in the band and chorus. We presented the annual senior play, The Boarding House Reach, under the direction of our sponsors and we are honored to have Mr. and Mrs. Red and White chosen from our room. We are looking forward to our senior trip. These are only a few of the fond memories of our high school days. Who's Who in the graduating class of 1953: George Rice, president; Margaret Murrell, Vice-President; Mary Ruth Cochran, Secretary-Treasurer; Joe Turner, Sergeant-at-Arms. Special honors included: Best-all-'round, George Rice and Margaret Murrell; Best looking, Chester Brockman and Patricia Merkley; Wittiest, Bob Jeffries and Hilda Willis; Most athletic, Eddie Hatfield and Hilda Willis; Best Musicians, Sonny Williams and Patricia Merkley; and Most likely to succeed, George Rice and Helen Claycomb.
