Renaissance Columbia Effort Pays Off Big

Adair County will be receiving a $150,000 grant for renovation of the Adair County Courthouse facade as a result of a grant application submitted by Renaissance Columbia in February of this year.

The application was submitted by a committee which includes Dwain Harris, Chairman; Richard Phelps, Charles Grimsley, Susan Loy, Ben Arnold, Beverly England, Darrell Overstreet, and Louise Hutchison.

Committee member Richard Phelps, on reporting the news, said that he wanted to give credit where it is due. He said, "While all of us on the committee contributed to the effort, Dwain Harris was the actual writer of this successful grant."

The grant comes from federal transportation enhancement funds.

This grant is thanks to Governor Paul Patton and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Federal-aid program under the Transportation equity Act for the 21st Century.

Governor Patton said, "I'm pleased to be able to provide funding for this project that preserves history and enhances the quality of life for the people of Adair County."

The Transportation Enhancement Program sets aside a portion of Kentucky's annual Surface Transportation funds for projects or activities that add community or environmental value to any planned or completed transportation project.

Each project must fall into one of twelve categories such as historic preservation, landscaping, scenic beautification, pedestrian or bicycle facilities.

Project requests were reviewed by the Transportation Cabinet for eligibility and forwarded to the Office of the Governor for selection.

Their selections are based on factors such as its benefit to the community and environment, cost, the relationship of the project to tourism and historic preservation, geographic distribution, and the availability of matching funds.
