LWC Volleyball opens NAIA National Championship Pool Play

Sioux City, IA - The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team begins pool play at the 2019 NAIA National Championship presented by Marriott South Sioux City Riverfront on Tuesday at the Tyson Events Center.

The No. 10-ranked Blue Raiders open pool play at 11amCT on Tuesday against No. 24 Reinhardt (GA). Lindsey Wilson faces Madonna (MI) at NoonCT on Wednesday and No. 7 Eastern Oregon at NoonCT on Thursday.

Following the conclusion of all pool play matches, the top two teams from each of the eight pools advance to the 16-team, single-elimination bracket scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The first round and quarterfinal matches are played on Friday, while the semifinals and championship matches are scheduled for Saturday.



Lindsey Wilson (29-5) makes its eighth straight appearance into the 32-team final-site field, receiving the Mid-South Conference's automatic bid after winning the conference tournament. The Blue Raiders enter pool play on a nine-match winning streak.

Lindsey Wilson is ranked 11th in the NAIA in team hitting percentage (.242). MSC Player of the Year Kasia Niderla enters the tournament with the top hitting percentage in the NAIA (.412) while ranking 10th in total kills (492).

Camryn Rich paces the offense from the setting position with 652 total assists. Three Blue Raiders average more than three digs per set, led by Lauren Larzelere averaging 4.21 digs per set.

The Blue Raiders are 24-11 all-time in the national tournament, including 15-6 in pool play. Lindsey Wilson has won 13 of its last 15 pool-play matches and reached the knockout stage the last six seasons.

Reinhardt (33-2) advanced to the final-site field after defeating Florida Memorial in straight sets in the NAIA Opening Round. The Eagles currently have a 27-match winning streak. RU won the Appalachian Athletic Conference to secure their spot in the national tournament. Reinhardt is making its second straight and second overall appearance at the national tournament's final site. RU did not reach bracket play last season after going 1-2 in pool play.

The Eagles rank eighth nationally in hitting percentage (.249) and kills per game (13.86). Reinhardt has a trio of players who average at least 2.3 kills per game. Tessa Colden leads with 258 total kills while Savanna Davis leads by averaging 2.41 kills per game. Mar Vives leads the Eagles defensively averaging 3.94 digs per set.

Madonna (25-12) defeated IU South Bend (Ind.) 3-2 in the NAIA Opening Round to reach Sioux City. The Crusaders earned an automatic bid into the national tournament after finishing runner-up in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. This is Madonna's 18th appearance at the NAIA National Championship.

The Crusaders are hitting .225 as a team while ranking fifth in the NAIA in total assists (1673) and seventh in total kills (1777). Offensively, Jodie Kelly leads the team and the NAIA with 663 kills. She averages 4.8 kills per set to rank second in the nation. Olivia Sweeney leads MU's defense with 582 digs, an average of 4.22 per set.

Eastern Oregon (29-3) earned an automatic bid into the national field and an opening-round bye after finishing runner-up in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament. The Mountaineers lost to Southern Oregon in three-sets at the Cascade Tournament finals. Eastern Oregon has won 18 of its last 21 matches. The Mountaineers are making their sixth consecutive national tournament appearance. Eastern Oregon is 13-9 all-time at the national tournament, including 10-5 in pool play. The Mountaineers have advanced beyond pool play four times, including the three past seasons.

Eastern Oregon is second in the NAIA in blocks per game, averaging 2.66 per set. Cambree Scott (1.27 blocks per game) and Taylor Tibbetts (1.20) both rank in the top 15 in the NAIA in blocks. Offensively, the Mountaineers enter Tuesday's play hitting .201 as a team. Megan Bunn leads the offensive attack with 368 kills.

Lindsey Wilson is 2-0 all-time against Reinhardt. The Eagles fell to the Blue Raiders in straight sets on August 23 at the Vette City Classic earlier this season. The Blue Raiders are 0-2 all-time against the Crusaders, with the last meeting in 2009. LWC last met EOU last season in pool play which resulted in a Blue Raider victory. Lindsey Wilson is 3-0 all-time against Eastern Oregon.

First serve between the Blue Raiders and the Eagles in NAIA National Championship pool play is scheduled for 11amCT on Tuesday from the Tyson Events Center.
