Lindsey Wilson wins 30-26 over Saint Francis

The No. 6 ranked Lindsey Wilson football team scored two touchdowns across the final three minutes of play as they were able to overcome a 10 point deficit to defeat No. 11 Saint Francis in the First Round of the NAIA Football Championship Series.

Trailing by 10 points with just 3:37 to play the Blue Raiders took over at their own 38-yard line. Cameron Dukes connected with Terrill Cole Jr. for 34 yards and then found Joshua Lewis for 25 yards to march the ball all the way to the Cougar four-yard line. Boyd capped off the 58 second, seven-play drive with a one-yard score.



A Saint Francis three and out gave Lindsey Wilson the ball back at their own 35-yard line. Facing a fourth and six, Dukes found Jaleel Warren over the middle for the first down to keep the Blue Raiders hopes alive. Dukes made use of the deep ball on the next play from scrimmage as he found Cole Jr. for 50 yards to the SFU one-yard line.

An illegal formation penalty pushed the Blue Raiders back five yards. On the next snap, Dukes scrambled his way into the end zone to give Lindsey Wilson a four-point lead after Jared Dougherty's made PAT, his fourth of the game.

Robert Carter put the game away when he picked off Matt Crable's pass with 7.9 seconds on the clock. LWC entered victory formation to run out the remaining time on the clock.

The fourth-quarter come from behind victory is the Blue Raiders 11th in program history as their last came against Grand View (Iowa) in a 34-27 victory in the 2016 Football Champions Series First Round.

Dukes was named the offensive player of the game, completing 20-of-35 passing attempts for 302 yards. His 302 yard performance marks the third time in his career he has broken the 300-yard mark. Dukes added 77 yards on the ground with two rushing touchdowns. Luke Bowman was named the defensive player of the game with his 10 tackles, eight solo adding two sacks. His five tackles for a loss tie a program-high.

Jaylen Boyd averaged 8.2 yards a carry on 14 attempts to break the 100-yard mark for the seventh time in his career. Cole Jr finished the game with four reception and a career-high 150-yards breaking the 100-yard mark for the second time in his career. James Todd slotted eight tackles, five solo in Lindsey Wilson's winning effort.

Lindsey Wilson was spotted an early lead when Saint Francis' punt attempt after a three and out on their first possession sailed over Joe Knepper's head into the end zone. The ball was recovered by Knepper but downed into the end zone for two LWC points.

Sloppy play resulted on the next two possessions as the Blue Raiders Todd forced and recovered a fumble at the Cougars 15-yard line. Despite the great field position, Lindsey Wilson would quickly turn the ball over when a trick play pass by Lewis was intercepted in the end zone by SFU's Jalen Moss.

Lindsey Wilson scored the game's first touchdown of the contest with 1:13 to play in the opening quarter. The seven-play, 80-yard drive was capped off by a Boyd 55-yard rushing score. Boyd burst through the left side of his offensive line untouched as he won the footrace to the end zone against Saint Francis' deep safety.

The Cougars responded on their next drive that extended into the second quarter. It took them eight plays and 61 yards of offense to find the end zone. Eli Wallace scored from two yards out to end the drive, cutting the Blue Raider lead to 9-7.

A scrambling Dukes found Cole Jr. over the middle on the fifth play of the Blue Raiders next drive for 57-yards and put LWC at the SFU four yard line. Two plays later, Dukes would take a QB keeper right up the middle for the score increasing the LWC advantage to nine points with 10:14 to play in the half. The drive rolled 89-yards in just seven plays.

Saint Francis mounted another long scoring drive that lasted 4:25 and ten plays. SFU started from their own 11-yard and was finished by a scrambling Matt Crable from four yards out. The score was the final of the half as LWC led 16-14.

The Cougars scored on their first two possession of the season half.

Dukes was picked off on the Blue Raiders opening drive by Jalen Moss, his second of the game. The Cougars took over at the LWC 11-yard line and scored two plays later when Crable found Dan Ricksy on a slant route from six yards out and the score.

The score saw Lindsey Wilson trail for the first time in the game at 20-16.

Lindsey Wilson drove from their own 25-yard line on their next possession to the Cougar 23 but the drive stalled out as they turned the ball over on downs. Saint Francis moved the ball 77 yards for their second straight touchdown of the third quarter. The point after sailed wide right as the Cougars lead was 26-16 with 4:33 to play in the third quarter. It was their final score of the game.

The matchups and game locations for all of the NAIA quarterfinals will be announced tonight after the conclusion of all the first round games.
