Gospel contest offering $5,000 for first place

As part of its 20th anniversary season, the Kentucky Center presents the Great Kentucky Gospel Shout Out! celebrating African-American church gospel choirs and paying tribute to their contribution to America's music. Any church choir performing African American gospel music in the style of Mississippi Mass, Kirk Franklin or James Cleveland is eligible. Participation is not restricted to African American Churches or individuals, but the musical style must be African American gospel.

First, second, and third place regional winners will receive awards of recognition and the first place regional winner will also be invited to perform in the final concert on October 19, 2003 in Louisville at the Kentucky Center. Top choirs selected from the finalists will receive cash honoraria: First place-$5,000; Second place-$2500; Third place-$1000.

How can I be a part of it? Fill out an application and send it in with a recording of your choir. Applications are available at National City Bank or call 888-568-4784 to request an application. Choirs will be selected from the applications to perform at the regional showcase closest to their church.

How big can the choir be? Choirs should be 15 to 50 members.

Where do we perform? Selected choirs will perform at the regional showcase nearest their church.

All performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

All events are free to the public.

What are the awards of recognition? Top choirs from the regional showcases receive plaques. The final showcase will also be televised on Kentucky Education Television.

How much are the cash honoraria? Top choirs selected from regional showcases will receive cash honorariums: First place-$5000; Second place-$2500; Third place-$1000.

When is the final showcase? The final showcase is in Louisville on October 19, 2003.

How about equipment for the performance? The Kentucky Center will provide the organ, piano/keyboard, drum kit, bass amp, guitar amp and microphones.

How long will each performance be? Each choir will perform for a total of 10 minutes for the live audience and the panel of judges.

What are the criteria for judging? Criteria for judging will focus on musical content (song selection and level of difficulty), and musicianship (diction, phrasing, intonation, interpretation, style).
