Business feature: Red Barn Bar-B-Q

At the turn of the century, Gary Dubree, who loved to cook barbecue, Monroe County style, had an idea that Columbia might just be hungry for it. He and his wife Marketta began to look for a possible location.

It seems like only yesterday that work began on the former Joyces Fabric building and rumors began circulating that Columbia was going to get a barbecue restaurant.

It has been more than a day, however, because Gary and Marketta Dubrees Red Barn Bar-B-Q restaurant is nearing it second anniversary. Customers have been sampling Garys cooking ever since they opened their doors on October 6, 2001, enjoying everything on the menu from the traditional shoulder, to chicken, pork chops and even slaw Burgers. Not long after they opened their weekend barbecue business the response was so strong that both of them gave up full-time jobs and expanded to four days of service every week. Theyre having a great time with their business, with Gary doing the cooking and Marketta serving the customers. They say it has far exceeded all their expectations.

Some of the challenges theyve experienced have been in seeing how much catering they could actually handle and still keep their food and regular hours consistent. One event they will always remember was catering the St. Judes ride in Breeding where they fed 400 Saddle Club members on Rattlesnake Ridge.

Their first anniversary, honoring the customers whove been so welcoming of them, included drawings for food and prizes: Michael Thompson won a tee shirt; Richard Lowe, a cap; Adam Bennett won a family pack of barbecue; and the 100th person to enter turned out to be regular customer Darrel VanArsdale who won a cap, a tee shirt and a free meal. Columbias Red Barn Bar-B-Q is located at 309 Hudson Street, phone 384-1645.
