Toll booths leaving but memories will remain By Linda Waggener Toll collection on the Louie B. Nunn (formerly Cumberland) Parkway may have ended on May 31, 2003, at midnight, but memories by those who held jobs, and those of us who passed through, remain. I've asked my Mother, Geniece Marcum, to write a few memories from her eleven-year state job as a Collector at the Edmonton toll booth prior to her retirement. If she does share her memories, I'll be sure to share them with you here. I worried about her on that job because of the ever-increasing traffic, especially after a truck driver hit one of the booths once. Thankfully she and her co-workers lived through the experience. Something was always happening on the job that would cause a laugh or alarm, or both. Among the most unbelievable memories she shared with me was of the streaker who stopped to pay his toll completely naked. I think that fellow caused many a distracted toll collector to get violations that night. The Bennett Family Gospel Singers lost one of their own yesterday, Helen Thompson. She will be missed by many! Jesus has a new Angel with him now. I can see her now, beside Jesus strumming her mandelin and singing "I'm a Winner Either Way." She was a fighter all the way to the end. She will no longer be in any pain nor suffer anymore. She has now joined her husband, Owen Thompson, and other family members, with her new family with Jesus. As I told our daughter, Samantha, of the news of Ma's passing, she screamed "No!" and melted in my arms, then a couple hours later as she was standing beside me, out of the blue she said, "Ma Helen is standing beside you, Moma, and she will always be with us with her angel winds," If a nine year old saying that does not bring tears to your eyes, nothing will.
