Sixth Litter of Shetland Sheepdogs a Winner! Boomer, Bandit, Wyatt Earp, Callie, Cassie, and Sophie--not necessarily in that order--out of Sugar, are the pride of D & D Longview Angus Farm and owners Danny and Debbie Burris. The miniature collies, originally called Shetland Sheepdogs in Scotland, are now five weeks old. In one more week, they will be available for sale for pets or for training as working sheepdogs. The puppies are the sixth litter of miniature collies for the the Burrises. There are three males and three females in this litter. At $200 each for the females and $175 for the males, it makes the table top of puppies in the picture worth well over a thousand dollars. (There are six puppies in the photo; one is almost hidden.) The Burrises will advertise the dogs by word-of-mouth in Adair County first. If they don't sell all that way, they'll place a classified ad in the local paper. Then, if necessary, they'll advertise in the Courier-Journal. "It never takes more than two weeks for a litter of puppies to be sold," Debbie said. Buyers come from all over the state, she says. A large number of the puppies tend to end up in Jefferson County. "Mostly people buy them for pets," Debbie said. In fact, she said that she doesn't know of any of their dogs which were later trained for sheep dog. "But they could be," she said. "They don't do well with cattle, because they want to herd them too close together, but they're great with sheep." "The puppies don't require a great deal of attention," Danny Burris said, "but they get it. Debbie plays with them a lot. That makes them really good pets." The Burrises sell the puppies without papers, though the mother is registered. "And," Debbie said, "the puppies' father's mother had papers. They are purebred miniature collies." The dogs are as happy in an urban setting as in the country. Debbie is the daughter of Joe and Marlene Moore. Joe Moore, a Coumbia City Councilman and devout townie, does visit the farm some, but is afraid of the Angus cows Danny and Debbie raise. However, he does love the dogs, and one of the momma dogs, Ladybug, loves to go to Columbia. "All I have to say is 'Let's go to Mema's and Pepaw's' and Ladybug jumps in the truck. She's really excited about a trip to Mom and Dad's." The Burrises also raise beagle hounds, which Danny, but on not so commercial a basis. Danny uses the beagles as trading stock. The farm covers 141 acres of the old Willie Nell Farm. The Burris farm house and the yard where the puppies play command one of the most stunning views in Adair County. High above Columbia, they can see all the water towers, the bright lights from the Chevron station, Gate, and Famous Recipe, as well as Aaron Medical Center; and they have a clear view of the Rowe farm and the commercial development on North 55 toward Cane Valley. With the hammock hanging between two shade trees, and the gentle breeze blowing there most all summer, one could get downright indolent, but not the Burrises.Besides the puppy sideline, the Burries also raise beef cattle. Danny, the son of Gertrude and the late Caleb Burris, is also true to another trade for which the Burris family is highly respected. He's a builder. With partner Mark Shively Parnell, he's constructed several of the homes in the Western Part of Adair County. One of the most recent ones is the Squire J.M. and Mrs. Shelley home on the Colonel William Casey/Flowers farm near Bliss. Anyone interested in the puppies can call 270-384-5766. Reed for kindnesses shown at the death of George "Woodie" Reed Jane and I would like to express our deepest appreciation to everyone for the love and many acts of compassion that were shown to us both before and after the passing of my father, George ("Woodie") Reed. During his term as Chief District Highway Engineer in Somerset, Dad got to work with a lot people here and he made a lot of friends. He developed a close relationship with the state road crew plus a number of Adair County CJE’s. A special note of thanks is extended to the board of education and all of our school district employees, Westlake Regional Hospital nurses and staff, the Summit Manor team, and all of our friends and neighbors who sent food, cards, gifts and/or made donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation. George had a lot of friends and he treasured every one of them. - Alan W. and Jane Reed 14 Mar 2015 Robert (Bobby) Blackwell, Jr., Adair Co., KY (d. Allender: My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family during this time. -Margaret VanHook Remembering Dora Helen Bennett Thompson By Jennifer Appleby Ma Helen will be greatly missed and always loved!! The Bennett Family Gospel Singers lost one of their own yesterday, Helen Thompson. She will be missed by many! Jesus has a new Angel with him now. I can see her now, beside Jesus strumming her mandelin and singing "I'm a Winner Either Way." She was a fighter all the way to the end. She will no longer be in any pain nor suffer anymore. She has now joined her husband, Owen Thompson, and other family members, with her new family with Jesus. As I told our daughter, Samantha, of the news of Ma's passing, she screamed "No!" and melted in my arms, then a couple hours later as she was standing beside me, out of the blue she said, "Ma Helen is standing beside you, Moma, and she will always be with us with her angel winds," If a nine year old saying that does not bring tears to your eyes, nothing will. We love you Ma Helen!! -Chris, Jennifer, Samantha, and Zachary Appleby Buy the book now from Amazon.com: Two Worlds Two Dreams Card of Thanks from family of Elaine Bennett The family of Elaine Bennett would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the tremendous amount of love and support we have received during the recent sickness & passing of a woman we loved so dearly. May God’s Richest Blessings be upon you all ! Jenny Winchester & the family of Elaine Bennett Card of Thanks from Victoria Pike Thank you for the many kindnesses and expressions of sympathy shown during the passing of my husband, Gary Pike, and my mother, Gertrude Browning in the last two months. This was a most difficult time but I have made it through with the help of good friends, family, neighbors. I was able to keep the cattle through this time with the help of my farmer friends and many of the members of the Adair Co. Cattlemen's Association. Neighbor helping neighbor as it was when I was a child. Also, to Intrepid Home Health and their nursing staff who were here almost every day of the last year and a half. They became family. I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel and small town Columbia is still about the best place on the planet to live. So thank you to all who were there when I need a friend. I have tried to get cards out but if I missed anyone, your kindness will never be forgotten. Vicky Browning Pike --Victoria Pike Advertisement: Thanks to ColumbiaMagazine.com Special Sponsors.
