James Harlin Burton, 72,

James Harlin Burton, 75, Liberty Road, Columbia, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at 2:45 a.m. at his home after a long illness.

The funeral service will be Monday, June 16, 2003, at 10:00 a.m., at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, Columbia, with Bro. Ralph Foster and Bro. Clifton Bennett officiating. Visitation is at the funeral home after 6:00 p.m., Saturday, June 15, 2003.


Mr. Burton was a farmer and a member of the Blooming Chapel Church. He attended Beulah Chapel Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelse and Lydia Cowan Burton, and by his stepmother, Maude Burton, all of Adair County, Kentucky.

He is survived by the following:
  • His wife of 56 years, Jewell Edna Hamon Burton, Columbia.
  • Four sons, Andrew Burton, Woodrow Burton, and Carl Burton, all of Columbia; and Davis Lee Burton, Chicago, IL
  • Four daughters, Liz Burton, Carolyn Burton, Dorinda Streeval, and Dorkis Burton, all of Columbia
  • One brother, Bobby Ray Burton, Edinburgh, IN
  • Two sisters, Mayme Stapleton and May Smith, both of Edinburgh, IN
  • One step brother, Willie Foster, Columbia
  • Four step sisters, Versie Streeval, Columbia; Lois Burton, Tennessee; and Freda Black and Jewell Harmon, both of Edinburgh, IN
  • Three half sisters, Leoma Hadley, Indianapolis, IN; and Martha Wheat and Enitith Bryant, both of Edinburgh, IN
  • One special uncle, John Henry Burton, Edinburgh, IN
  • and 17 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lois Burton, and a half sister, Lucy Smith, and by four grandchildren.

Interment will be in the Bearwallow Cemetery.
