Prayer request and progress report for baby Evan Smith Waggener

By Linda Waggener

Thank you for continuing to pray with family as newborn Evan Smith Waggener recovers from surgery at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

Evan was born at 5:08 a.m. 6/14/03 at Owensboro Mercy Hospital, the son of Amy Smith and Pen Waggener, the little brother of Graham. He is the grandson of Ken and Kay Smith of Ashland and Ed and Linda Waggener of Columbia.

Prayers are lifting up Evan Smith Waggener's name from Owensboro and Columbia to Edmonton to Ashland to Louisville and Indianapolis to Bowling Green, Nashville, California and Japan, requesting a full and complete healing.

SUNDAY, 6/15/03: Surgery began just after noon today (in a 3 to 6 hour operation), and both the first and second reports from the surgical team were positive -- everything going as it should be.

Update 4:47 p.m. 6/15/03: Surgery is complete and our tiny patient is in recovery!

MONDAY, 6/16/03 noon update: Evan made it fine through the night, recovery is going as expected. He may be able to get off the ventilator later today. Parents have been able to visit him and hold his hand and Mom Amy says he opened his eyes and looked into hers twice. They hope to get to hold him this evening if he is able to be off the ventilator.

TUESDAY: parents got to spend more time with Evan, holding and encouraging him. The ventilator is off and he is alert and studying his new surroundings and family with great interest.

THURSDAY, 6/19/03: This morning one more tube was removed as Evan takes another step toward full recovery. He is doing a little better every day! His big brother Graham made the trip to Nasvhille today to collect hugs from his Mommie and Daddy and to wave at Evan through the glass.

SATURDAY, 6/21/03: Happy first-week birthday, Evan! The little fellow has had quite a first week of life, with challenges making a helicopter ride necessary from Owensboro to Vanderbilt University Medical Center NICU in Nashville where he would be stabilized and prepared for surgery. With prayers and expert care, he's alive and making steady progress one week later. Evan got his first oral feeding yesterday. He's off his pain meds which is a good thing, but adjusting to that is hard on him. Pen and Amy are staying nearby at the Ronald McDonald house so one of them can be with Evan at every visit time.

SUNDAY, 6/22/03: Amy called early this morning to say Evan had a great night and got past a major milestone in his recovery. The medical team is very proud of his progress.

MONDAY EVENING, 6/23/03: Evan is progressing on schedule. Today was a good one for him. He began nursing and the doctors say he may be able to move to another level of care tomorrow if he continues to do well through the night.

WEDNESDAY MORNING, 6/25/03: Major breakthrough -- Evan has been moved out of ICU and into his own room where his Mom and Dad can stay with him all the time. He is off all tubes, has discovered Mother's milk, and is "eating like a little pig". All vital signs are good. Evan's phone number is 615-343-5084 in room 6004. FRIDAY EVENING, 6/27/03: Evan was allowed to go home today! He enjoyed his first land cruise with his Mom and Dad from Nashville to Owensboro where big brother Graham awaited their arrival with his Nana Smith and Granny Conlin. The homecoming was reported to be a grand time and much thanksgiving is going on.

SATURDAY, 6/28/03: Evan celebrated his second week birthday at home! He was the focus of a big celebration complete with full thanksgiving meal of turkey and dressing and all the fixings. He is doing all the things he is supposed to be doing in his recovery phase and will go back to Nashville Wednesday as an out patient for more test results. Please join us in prayers for Evan's head-to-toe healing and for safe passage for his whole family in all the travel.

THURSDAY, 7/3/03: Another hurdle for Evan. Test results show he needs to have a liver biopsy which is scheduled for next Wednesday.

MONDAY, 7/7/03: We're thankful today that Evan got good scores from his Owensboro pediatrician -- a strong weight gain, which the doctors had been insisting on, along with other good indicators that he is improving. Still he has to return to Vanderbilt University Medical Center Wednesday morning for a needle biopsy on his liver. Our family is asking you to join us in this greatest prayer effort now through his Wednesday procedure for his continued and ultimate healing. Evan is a fighter or he wouldn't be here with us. He is doing his part, the doctors are doing theirs and you, joining with us, are making sure we all do ours by asking God for a miraculous work in this baby.

THURSDAY MORNING, 7/10/03: We're so thankful to report that Evan came through the liver biopsy fine and rested well overnight. His Mom and Dad are hoping to get to come home this afternoon. We're awaiting the official biopsy test result and will share it as soon as we have more information.

As the week ended Vanderbilt reported that the lab was backlogged because of the holiday so biopsy results won't be known until next week. We will pass news along as soon as we hear. In the meantime, please keep Evan in your thoughts and prayers as he goes back Monday, July 14, for yet another test and for a follow-up appointment with the surgeon. He is enjoying the weekend at home.

Evan celebrates his first month on this earth with a sweet personality and patient attitude toward all the health care professionals who have have had to poke, stick and slice on him in efforts to save his life. Hundreds of prayers have gone up calling on God to save Evan and guide every hand that touches him. To date he has recovered beautifully from the surgery, his first challenge, and now there remains the question of jaundice and what to do if it doesn't heal naturally in a short time. So, here's this Mema's request: while Evan is in the loving hands of family between follow-up appointments at Vanderbilt, please pray with us that God will allow his body to rest and completely heal of all complications so that when the physicians examine him next, they will know that God has been working to enhance all their efforts because Evan will be well and symptom-free.

GOD ANSWERED OUR PRAYERS, all of your's and mine, as two-month-old Evan Smith Waggener received excellent test results from his Vanderbilt medical team because his blood counts and weight gain are so close to normal. The fantastic news brought tears of absolute joy, and it is jubilee time in our family.

When life is threatened, especially the life of a little one, it's almost impossible to speak, let alone form words in prayer. When Evan was born not breathing, resuscitated and flown to Nashville for emergency surgery, there were hours, even days that our family could barely make a sentence without breaking down. That's why it is so vital that prayer partners step in as each of you have done for Evan's family. Through his recovery, then the complications afterward, you have continued to lift him up with us, calling on God for his complete healing. God heard and answered. THANK YOU so very, very much for all your prayer work and for future prayers for the continued health and safety of Evan and his big brother Graham as the two grow up together in the loving care of their Mom and Dad.

There is no way to thank each of you who have prayed for Evan and this family, except to return the believer's pledge to be on call for you and yours: I will be there to pray with you whenever you need "...two or more together in His name..." praying on your behalf as we have needed you praying for Evan.
Call me any hour of any day if I can give you the gift of prayer assistance you have given Evan:
