Birgerud's golden goal pushes LWC women's soccer past Cumberlands By Christopher Coombs The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team defeated and No. 18 Cumberlands (Ky.) 1-0 in double-overtime on senior day as they wrap up regular-season competition at Walter S. Reuling Stadium. Thea Birgerud would give the Blue Raiders (11-3-1, 7-0-0 MSC) the win with her golden goal strike in the 106th minute. Sina Cavelti set up Birgerud's free-kick when she started to get past her defender and was dragged down. Birgerud strike came from 28-yards out, just left of midfield before beating the goalkeeper to end the match. Jovana Ivanovic was brilliant in goal for LWC as she stopped all 13 shots she faced in the contest. The Blue Raiders were outshot by the Patriots (10-2-1, 5-1-0 MSC) 32-11 for the match. Cumberlands controlled much of the action in the first half as they recorded 15 shots, six on goal. The Patriots were able to create multiple scoring opportunities but LWC goalkeeper Ivanovic would deny the attempts as she finished the half with six saves. The Blue Raiders tallied just five shots as three made their way on target. The Patriots would continue to push the pace into the second half as they tallied 14 more shots, six of them being on frame. Ivanovic once again stood tall in goal as she stopped all six shots. LWC was limited to just two shots as both were on goal. Amara Safuan would nearly end the game early in the second overtime period when her left-footed shot from just inside the 18 sailed just over the crossbar. The attempt was the best chance either team managed before Birgerud's game-winner. Lindsey Wilson wraps up regular season play on Wednesday when they travel just down the road to take on Campbellsville (Ky.) at 5 p.m. CT. This story was posted on 2019-10-27 19:31:59
