Gradyville Flood anniversary Personal accounts of the tragic flood of 1907 describe a normal, hot June day in the little town of Gradyville where ordinary folks just like us did their work on a Friday and breathed a sigh of relief as they finished up and headed in for an evening of rest. Then the words share the alarm and the grief caused by a late night eight-to-nine-foot wall of water, visible only because of nonstop lightning, picking up mature trees and huge rocks, rolling over anyone and anything in its path of destruction, claiming 20 lives. An avalanche of water struck Gradyville that Friday night, destroying the town, drowning a large number of its inhabitants. Twenty persons were known to be lost, and when daylight allowed, Saturday, 13 bodies were found. The search was kept up incessantly after the downpour until all 20 bodies were found. Sunday, Gradyville presented a scene of sorrow, as more than 3,000 people viewed the dead and wreckage. Click here for the complete history of the flood, including personal accounts and the full news stories of the event, all from the special June 1997 print issue of Columbia! Magazine.
