LWC Volleyball Defeats Brescia in Four-Sets

The No. 13-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team defeated Brescia (Ky.) in four-sets on Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.

Sophomore Alexis Smith led the Blue Raiders with 15 kills, while freshman Kasia Niderla was close behind her with 13. Freshman Camryn Rich recorded her third double-double of the season, as she finished with 18 assists and 10 digs. On defense, sophomore Lauren Larzelere led Lindsey Wilson with 12 digs.



Set one saw the Blue Raiders take control and gain a comfortable advantage, holding a 19-10 lead late in the match at the first called timeout. Despite a strong finishing act from the Bearcats, Lindsey Wilson held on to secure a 25-19 set one victory. Alexis Smith led Lindsey Wilson on offense with five kills, while Camryn Rich and Autumn Proctor combined for 10 of the teams 11 assists. The Blue Raiders hit .270, while limiting the Bearcats to a .106 mark.

Set two was all Lindsey Wilson from the start, as they lead 9-3 at the first called timeout. The Blue Raiders continued to roll all the way to the 20 point mark, as the defense held Brescia to just seven points as the match hit the closing stages. The controlled set two for LWC ended in a 25-9 set victory. Niderla recorded four kills, while Proctor and Rich each tallied four assists. Larzelere and Abby Grubbs each tallied three digs on defensive.

Attempting to force a set four to keep the match alive, the Bearcats came out strong in the third set as they led 10-6 when the first timeout was called. Brescia had no problem controlling things the rest of the way, leading 21-13 late and closing out Lindsey Wilson on a 4-1 run to win the set 25-14. Smith had two kills in the set for LWC, while Rich led with three assists. On defense, Larzelere recorded three digs.

Set four began as a back and forth battle with both teams attempting to gain the important upper hand. Despite the close play, the Blue Raiders were able to create space and establish an 18-14 lead late in the set. Lindsey Wilson would end things off with strong momentum to secure the 25-17 match-sealing set four victory. The victory marks the 18th win of the season for LWC. Niderla tallied four kills, while Rich had five assists and four digs in a strong finishing set.

The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team was able to raise $1,172 during tonight's pink out game for the Side-Out Foundation, who are working on clinical trials to fight stage IV breast cancer .

The Blue Raiders return to action at 5:30pmCT on Tuesday to face Cumberlands (Ky.) at Biggers Sports Center.
