One room schoolhouse volunteer work update, plan

Another work day is planned for October 19, 2019 from 7amCT until the last of the work is completed. All volunteers are welcome and one more day is expected to put the project very nearly complete. We hope to celebrate this accomplishment very soon.

The second work day on the Flatwood's Rosenwald School building was a great success. Workers began gathering around 7amCT on Saturday, October 5, 2019 for another day of restoration and preservation on the only remaining Rosenwald building in Adair County, and one of the better examples in the state.

Two weeks previous a fine group began the work and since that time several hours have been put toward the clean-up, repair and paint removal in preparation for coats of life-preserving white paint on the outside as well as the inside.

The major work on the outside of the building, including repair and replacement of the large windows, which are the noted architectural feature of a Rosenwald structure, was undertaken by the Band of Brothers, the Christian Church Mission Group noted for their philanthropic work.

Some of the windows had to be replaced in part, others needed pane replacement, as well as scraping and painting. In the expert hands of these professionals, the work was quickly undertaken and largely completed.

Throughout the past week and on Saturday those who participated in the project were: Bobby Morrison, project leader for the Band of Brothers, Rev. Bobby Bowe, Rodney White, Donna Banks White, Sammy Hughes, Mike Watson, Bob Fishback, Jack Fishback, Matt Calvert, the master painter, Mark Miller, Danny Propes, Bob Barnes, Beverly England Brady, Dennis Loy, Rev. Gene Grasham, Fred Miller.

During the past week Bobby Morrison, Rodney and Donna White, Bobby Bowe and Sammy Hughes worked additional hours on the siding and on the inside of the school. Long hours have been devoted to this most worthwhile project that has stabilized the iconic building for the future.

At this time, and by the end of the second work day, the inside painting is nearly complete, siding repaired or replaced, two coats of paint on the outside, damaged windows repaired and replaced, windows glazed, porch and ramp repaired and shored up. Window and door work are finished with Green River Window & Door donating, and window made by Randy Quinn and associates. Looks great! Many thanks to them!

There is still some work to do. Another day is planned for October 19 from 7 a.m. until the last of the work is completed. All volunteers are welcome and one more day will put the project very nearly complete. We hope to celebrate this accomplishment very soon. Many thanks to the Band of Brothers and anyone who might have been missed when the list of workers was made, please let us know!

Rosenwald School Committee,
Adair Heritage Association.

One of the tall one-room Flatwoods School windows was in need of replacement. A new window has been installed by volunteers working on the schoolhouse thanks to Green River Window and Door. Randy Quinn & associates made it by hand because tooling is not available any longer.
