Richards Carries Adair County 2-1; Fletcher Wins

Garlin native and House Speaker Jody Richards carried the primary votefor Democratic nominee for governor in Adair County by a nearly 2-1margin, beating rival A. B. "Ben" Chandler, the statewide winner, by atotal of 642 to 380.

Richards carried 13 precincts, the absentees, and tied in one precinct,Little Cake. Chandler carried only Glens Fork-Melson Ridge and SouthColumbia 2.


Otis Hensley, the third candidate still on the ballot, got 9 votescounty wide, with his biggest showing, 2 votes, in SouthColumbia-Harmony. Votes for Bruce Lunsford, who quit the race, werediscarded.

Republican Fletcher Wins Republican Gubernatorial Race
On the Republican side of the primary, Ernie Fletcher was the winner inAdair County as well statewide. His local vote total was 608 votes, to420 for Steve Nunn, 249 for Rebecca Jackson, and 7 for VirgilMoore.

Fletcher carried all Adair precincts, except Milltown, which went toSteve Nunn. Fletcher also won the absentees.

Richie Farmer top vote getter in county
The top vote getter in the county, for the evening, was formerUniversity of Kentucky basketball star Richie Farmer, who polled 877votes to Buck Beasley's 225 for the Republican nomination forAgriculture Commissioner. On the Democratic side, Barney Hornbackreceived the most votes, with 371, carrying 11 precincts outright,tying in three, and winning the absentee count. He was followed bySteve Meredith, who carried two precincts and tied in 2 precincts.Alice Woods Baesler was third with 98.
