KDE releases School Report Cards for 2018-2019 By Pen Waggener Distilling the year-long work of hundreds of adults and thousands of schoolchildren into a single 5-star score, the Kentucky Department of Education has released school report cards this week for the 2018-2019 school year. Adair County schools managed a 3-star rating for elementary, middle, and high schools. The combined 2019 rating for all the schools in the state was also 3 stars for elementary, middle, and high schools. Of course, those star ratings are derived from hundreds of data points for each school. Among the graphs and charts, one metric stands out for Adair County Schools, Transition Readiness at ACHS. Transition Readiness measures, in part, whether students who graduate are prepared for college and/or a career. For the 2018-2019 school year, Adair County High School scored an 87.9 out of 125 on this metric, compared to a statewide score of 66.8 out of 125. Asked about the score, Adair County High School Principal Troy Young said, "it is a concentrated effort on everyone's part to raise our accountability and grow our students. Our end game is to prepare students for a career." Assistant Principal Chad Parnell pointed out some additional reasons for the 2019 score. "One, KDE changed the method of calculating the academic readiness portion of transition readiness. In turn, programs that we had in place for the benefit of our students (not necessarily targeted at getting a higher score) resulted in a higher transition readiness score. We always strive to do what is best for students. Secondly, our career readiness portion of transition readiness has also increased. The addition of career pathways, as well as a focus on every student having a career pathway, has led to this increase." Report Cards for Local Area Schools:
