Treece Selected New Superintendent

Darrell Treece has been unanimously selected as the new superintendent of Adair County Schools to replace outgoing superintendent Keith Young. He was given a four year contract at a base salary of 90,000 per year.

The vote came at a special called meeting Thursday evening, May 1, 2003, at the Adair County Board of Education office conference hall.

Treece replaces current Superintendent Keith Young, whose contract was not renewed.

Four members of the Adair County Board of Education were present for the meeting. Member Chris Watts nominated Treece, and Member Travis Bryant seconded it. All four members, including Greg Willis and Chairman of the Board Mike Harris voted by a show of hands.

Following the vote, Chairman Harris read a letter from the fifth board member, Marsha Walker (see full text at end of article), in which she concurred with the other members. Chris Watts noted, after the meeting, that Mrs. Walker was in telephone contact with other other members while they were in executive session. "She told us she would have voted for Treece," he said, adding, "it's not an official vote, but we're all together on this."Treece is currently Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, Paris, Kentucky Independent Schools. He holds a Rank I certificate from Eastern Kentucky University, an MA from Union College, and received his undergraduate from Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, Tennessee.

In remarks to the board after his selection, Treece displayed humor when he noted that "In all the reports I've read, Adair County is always listed first," then paused and said, "I aim to keep it that way."

Watts, commenting on the new superintendent, said that he thought Adair County is fortunate to have him. "We've talked to many who know him," and they all say, "He's above reproach."

Letter from Board Member Marsha Walker:

(Please read this statement at May 1, 2003 school board meeting and attach to minutes)

This statement explains my absence from the May 1 meeting of the Adair County Board of Education. On November 23, 2002, four friends and I made reservations for a vacation trip the week of April 21, 2003. On February 14, 2003, we rescheduled the trip to April 28, to accommodate my schedule in the superintendent selection process.

I represented the school board on the superintendent screening committee, which also included two teachers, a parent, a classified employee and a principal. The committee spent many hours reviewing the 27 applicant files and selecting 14 applicants on which we completed thorough background and reference checks. We chose seven candidates to interview during the week of April 14. Following the completion of these interviews, we were able to prepare a list of five candidates to recommend to the board. I never served with a more committed group of people than this screening committee. Each one worked hard and took the job seriously.

On April 17, all applicant files were presented to the school board. At a joint meeting on April 18, the screening committee reviewed each of the five candidates applications and resumes and gave reasons for their choices. The board chose to interview the five candidates.

The initial school board interview dates were set for the week of April 21. Because of prior commitments of some board members, we were able to interview two candidates that week, leaving three interviews for the week of April 28. Having already done extensive research and interviewed the five finalists with the screening committe, I felt very good about the remaining board members interviewing the last three without my input. In addition, it would have been too late and unfair to my friends to try to reschedule our vacation again.

I had made my choice (Treece) among the five finalist, but assured the other board members I would go along with another candidate if they chose to do so. All five candidates had the experience, character, and commitment to children to serve all our district well, in my opinion.

s/MARSHA WALKER

Sworn and subscribed to this day before me by Marsha Walker. This 1st day of May, 2003.
Margie Williams, Notary Public
My commission expires 9/27/06
